Diabetes mellitus is turning as one of the commonly encountered clinical conditions. This causes glucose i.e., sugars in blood to remain at a higher level. Widely-known 2 forms of this disease are type 1 and type 2 versions of diabetes. Drugs such a Trulicity are used for treating type 2 form of diabetes. Do you know of foods to avoid with Trulicity? It is of use to have more details.

Foods you eat – when digested – are broken into various other substances. Glucose is one among such chemicals; this plays a critical role in supplying energy to your body. A hormone known as insulin helps sugars to enter your cells. An organ called pancreas makes insulin. Among those who are non-diabetic, pancreas makes needful amount of insulin – i.e., as and when glucose levels increase.

Insulin helps your cells to absorb sugars. When you have diabetes, your cells’ ability to respond to this hormone changes. Also, your pancreas’ capability to make needful level of insulin is altered. In case of type 1 form of diabetes, your immunity cells impair your insulin-making cells present on your pancreas.

In case of type 2 version of diabetes, your cells lose their ability to respond to insulin. This causes a build-up of sugars in your blood.

What is Trulicity?

Trulicity is one of the popular drugs used for treating type 2 form of diabetes. It is administered along with a daily workout plan and a few dietary changes. The generic form of Trulicity is known as dulaglutide. This forms part of a genre of meds known as agonists of glucagon-like peptide 1 i.e., GLP – 1 receptor(s).

Active ingredients of Trulicity mirror the actions of GLP – 1. This hormone is a naturally-forming substance in the human body. This helps in restricting sugar levels in blood by enhancing insulin secretion and also reducing production of glucose by your liver. This hormone also slows you’re your rate of digestion as well as reduces your appetite level.

GLP – 1 – in its natural form - takes only a few minutes’ time to perform the above tasks. But the lab-made equivalents – drugs like Trulicity – can work for more than six (6) days. This is the reason why Trulicity – in its injectable form - is dosed once per week.

Foods to avoid with Trulicity

While you are taking drugs like Trulicity, you are advised to avoid a few foods. For example, stay away from deeply-fried foods. Such foods may cause stomach upset as well as nausea. This is primarily because these fried-foods can take a longer time to get emptied from your stomach. Your dietitian may advise you to go for baked or steamed foods.

Refine grains like white rice or white bread can lead to build-up of sugars. Hence, refined grains are to be avoided while you are taking Trulicity. Moreover, avoid foods which may have sugars added onto them. Beware of foods such as nutrition-bars, whole grain breads, dried fruits, etc; these may have sugars added to them but may appear healthy.

You are advised to take foods high on proteins – such as cheese, fish or chicken. You can also try eggs as these are abundant sources of protein. You can also take nuts more often because these have unsaturated fats and fibers in them.

Care to take vegetables with no or less starch in them. You can try vegetables like eggplants, mushrooms, onions, radishes, sprouts, tomatoes, etc. In general, stay away from taking large-sized meals. Such meals can make you nauseated.

You are advised to inject Trulicity of the same day every each. If you are changing the day you use Trulicity, ensure to have an interval of at least 3 days from the time of your last dosage. If you have missed a dosage of Trulicity, and there is three full days more to go for your next dose, you can take the dose you missed.
