There are a few home remedies to manage tonsil stones i.e., before you decide to visit a qualified ENT specialist. Home-based remedies can be useful only if your condition is not severe and is easily treatable at the comforts of your own home.

Here are some home remedies you can try:

  • Gargle with warm water; adding a small quantity of salt helps
  • Cough forcefully to dislodge stony deposits from your throat
  • Use a water pick / water-based flosser to flush tonsil stones out
  • Drink a lot of water to flush-out debris settled in the folds of your tonsils
  • Use a cotton swab – to gently push tonsil stones out

If none of these methods work, your healthcare provider may help in removal of tonsil stones during a scheduled visit to his / her clinic. You need not worry about tonsil stones if they do not bother you. However, if they are recurring, or have started creating symptoms discomforting you it is time to go for treatment options.

There are a few Over-the-Counter (OTC) drugs; mostly pain relievers, which help relieve discomforts these stones trigger. Medications such as antibiotics can cure your infection, if any. Nevertheless, these can only provide short-term relief. Temporary pain relief is possible through topical anesthetics as well. Your healthcare provider may opt for tonsillectomy – a surgical procedure to remove tonsils off. However, this is done for recurrent or severe cases.

Sometimes caregivers may use imaging tests / scans to find stones not visible to naked eyes. These tests include x-rays, ultrasound, and a Computer Tomography (CT) scan. However, CT scans or other advanced diagnostic tests are done only if your healthcare provider suspects the symptoms to be indicative of any other underlying medical condition i.e., apart from tonsil stones.
