As women age, structure and tissues of their breasts undergo several changes. Most of these changes are attributed to altered levels of hormone. Age also contributes to their breasts losing their fullness as well as firmness. Aged women are at an added risk of getting breast conditions like cysts, fibroadenomas, breast cancers, etc. But how often is breast asymmetry cancer? It helps to know more on this front.
Your body produces less of estrogen when you become older. This reduction has a direct impact on the appearance of your breasts. Your breasts may lose their elasticity. This is a reason why many aged women develop flattened or stretched breast(s).
Size of your breasts also tend to undergo a change; this is attributed to fats replacing the dense tissues in breasts. Also, menopause is a stage in a woman's life wherein you stop witnessing menstrual cycles. It is a common thing among women aged 42 to 52 years. Your condition is labelled as ‘menopause’ if you do not have periods continuously for 1 year.
These hormonal changes may also make your nipples to point downward or flatten / stretch your breasts. In most women, a space develops between their breasts; in some, stretch marks develop on their chest region.
Most of these effects are quite common among aged women; but some are not common. These include reddening of your breasts; thickening of skin; discharges from your nipples; incidence of chronic pains and development of cysts within. Lastly, if one of your breasts appears different from the other breast, it needs to be taken seriously.
What are breast cancers?
Cancer is caused by an abnormal cellular-level growth. Some cells in your body may rapidly multiply and may spread to healthy cells. This rapid-growth ruins your tissues and organs – as the condition spreads. The typical signs of breast cancers are - formation of cysts, sudden loss of body weight, reddening of breasts’ skin, discoloration, sores taking longer time to heal, sudden changes in the size of moles, etc.
You are advised to look-out for softened nipples, bumps forming underneath armpits or pores of skin (of your breasts) turning larger, etc. These changes may need a thorough examination under the watchful eyes of a qualified caregiving team.

Research shows most cases of asymmetry of breasts are not cancerous. As per Cancer Society in the US, only 7% of all breast cancers show up with asymmetrical breasts. It is quite a common thing to develop such asymmetries between breasts; however, stay aware of sudden alterations.
