Nyquil is a cold and cough product available over the counter. If you are trying to sleep when you are down with flu or cold, it is a very hard to do. A few medications can put you to sleep. These meds can also treat you as you are sleeping. Doctors prescribe drugs such as Nyquil for this purpose. This drug is well-tolerated and you can administer it to kids as young as 7 years of age. Dosages administered onto children are quite different from those given to adults. Nyquil – when taken at high doses - can lead to very adverse outcomes. Intake of two pills may cause a few acute side effects; likewise, it is unsafe to take more than 8 capsules or 120 ml of the liquid form within 24 hours’ time.

Why does Nyquil make you sleepy?

Nyquil makes you sleepy because it has doxylamine oxalate. This is essentially an antihistamine med. This is the reason why Nyquil makes you have a deep sleep. A few forms of Nyquil may have alcohol in them. This further leads to deeper sedation.

Owing to these sedative effects, it is best administered before bedtime. Those who took it during daytime may see a few side effects like dizziness, loss of balance and lack of coordination. It is equally dangerous to use Nyquil as a substitute for sleeping pills.

Side effects of an overdose of Nyquil include blurring of eyesight, onset of migraines, discomforts in your throat, nose or throat, congestion of nasal pathways or you may turn restless. Those who used Nyquil as a sleep aiding med may witness slowdown in breathing, shallow cycles of inhalation and exhalation, etc.

It is unsafe to take Nyquil along with alcohol. This practice can cause serious damage to your liver. Those living with hepatic disorders like cirrhosis or inflammation of liver need to inform their doctor of all such ailments.

How long does Nyquil take to make you sleepy?

Nyquil takes about 25 to 30 minutes’ time for you feel sleepy. But this drug is never used as a sleeping aid. The time Nyquil takes to start functioning varies from one person to another. Those who are hypersensitive to any of the three key ingredients i.e., doxylamine, acetaminophen and dextromethorphan – your doctor needs to be informed of such conditions.

Your medical condition, age, body weight, rate of metabolism and presence of other ailments - if any, influence the time Nyquil takes to make you sleepy. Those who are taking it as an OTC med must read the instructions printed on the label carefully. Those who exceeded the safer levels may show signs of passing out or may feel extremely dizzy. In some, your breathing may turn shallow. In all such cases, rush to the nearest healthcare facility as quickly as possible.
